METROPOLITAN CATHEDRAL
More than 55 years, between 1875 and 1930, and the intervention of French architect Carlos Carré, were needed to complete this imposing structure. In all its grandeur, the Cathedral flanks centrally-located Bolívar Square to the north. It is said that it is the largest church in the world built in its entirety out of bricks, 1,120,000 of them to be exact. The Romanesque church holds important and much admired architectural features and works of art, including its stained glass windows, the altar canopy, its pulpit, and the marble holy water fonts, among many others. Its Walker organ is already considered a collector's item. Another piece, not to be missed, and greatly admired by visitors, is The Forgiving Christ, by artist Francisco Antonio Cano, hung over the Holy Host Altar.
