This Colonial-Baroque styled construction stands on Avenida Oriental Street in the heart of downtown Medellín. Its construction, begun in 1847 on the same spot where other chapels once stood, was finally completed in 1902 with the reconstruction of its façade, which was possible through the work of Jesuit architect Félix Pereira. The church courtyard, traversed by thousands of people, is adorned with a water fountain sculpture by artist Francisco Antonio Cano and donated by the Sociedad de Mejoras Públicas, a non-profit agency that works for the beautification of public spaces. Inside, the church holds the beautifully done San José altarpiece, The Baptism of Jesus, another piece by Cano, and a painting of San Lorenzo, the city's first patron saint. This canvas, highly valuable for its historic, artistic, and religious content, was donated to the church by Francisco Herrera y Campuzano, founder of the Village of San Lorenzo at the same site where El Poblado Square now stands.
